We have offered some hints on wattage in earlier articles, but there is also a handy formula one can use to determine how much light is adequate for a particular space. With some basic math, you can easily figure out how many watts you'll need in multiple-bulb contemporary home lighting fixtures.
Simply multiply the dimensions of the room by 1.5 for total watts. For example, if you are illuminating a 10'x10' room, multiply 13x20x1.5 for a total of 390 watts. Applying this formula to a 10-light chandelier for instance, would only require 40-watt bulbs for a room of this size.
There is one exception, however. When you wish to concentrate morelight over a work space such as a cooking or reading area, multiply the dimensions of the room by 2.5 to estimate total watts.

For obvious safety reasons, steer clear of using floor lamps and desk lamps to light a child's room. These units can be easily tipped over, and kids can get themselves tangled in the cord. However, there are a number of terrific contemporary home lighting choices right here that are safe, elegant and yet fun and funky for youngsters' play spaces.
In the rooms of any age of children, lighting that is installed at thecenter of the ceiling is probably the safest bet. Make sure the bottom of the fixture hangs at least 6 1/2 to 7 feet from the floor to give comfortable clearance for adults. If the fixture hangs above a bed, consider allowing extra clearance room to keep little bed jumpers safe.
